FRIENDAVERSARYYYYYYY

January 21st, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

ONCE AGAIN FACEBOOK THANK YOU FOR FUNCTIONING AS THE MEMORY PORTION OF MY BRAIN! I met this lil lady on a job four years ago, during which mild sexual harassment and a love of 5 pm cocktails and plays bonded us for life.  Four years later, she is still my confidante and armrest and now also bridesmaid.

FOUR MORE YEARS! FOUR MORE YEARS!

SNERRRRRRR!

January 20th, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

I’M GOING TO NYC THIS WEEKEND AND IT’S GOING TO SNOWWWWW!  I AM SO EXCITED. I AM A BABY IN A SNOW SUIT.  I AM GOING TO FROLIC THROUGH IT AND SPIN INSIDE OUT IT AND CATCH IT IN MY MOUTH AND BUILD IT INTO THINGS. MY CHILDHOOD WILL THEN END AND IT WILL THEN CONVENIENTLY STOP SNOWING EXACTLY WHEN I NEED IT TO SO THAT THE RUNWAY CAN BE CLEARED AND I CAN MAKE IT BACK HOME FOR WORK ON MONDAY.

DO YOU HEAR ME, SNOW? SNOW, CAN YOU READ WORDS? DO YOU READ MY BLOG, SNOW?

playwrights interview playwrights

January 19th, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

I love this concept. In interviews, playwrights oftentimes get asked the same questions, what inspired the play, what advice do you have for young writers, etc, so when a playwright interviews a playwright, the interviewer knows which questions are over or already asked, and instead tosses out the kind of questions that they might want to be asked. So if I was, say, interviewing my friend and yoga teacher and hero Sheila Callaghan for her upcoming production at the Echo, I might, say, ask her what a sentence is like inside of her head, what she likes to make in her crockpot, and what is wrong with my warrior pose, and we might spill wine everywhere and we might be two playwrights in heaven, rambling about the things that round us out as we shove snacks intended for children into our gobs.

Today, on Movies can (and should be) hopeful

January 18th, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

We watched this beautiful movie last night, Room.  Its story is something terrible that you hear about all too often: woman kidnapped, locked in basement or shed of sorts,  assumed dead for years, repeatedly raped by her captor, bears his child in captivity. It sounds awful AND IT IS. But Room is told from the perspective of the little boy, and focuses on the heartbreakingly innocent way in which his views his tiny world. When he is born, his mother refocuses her life on survival and the raising of her son, protecting him.  They develop a tiny world that contains just the two of them, and they Live.  For me it’s a perfect example of how a movie can be about something ultimately awful and difficult, but it can also LIFT US UP AND OUT.

SOMEDAYDANCE

January 16th, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

Late January each year, twenty percent of all theater and TV and film people disappear to Sundance, which is still a thing that I don’t fully understand. It’s a film festival, but everyone goes, regardless of whether or not you actually have a film there. In my mind, everybody mills about in their grandmother’s fur coats, standing in lines, shaking hands, or standing in lines shaking hands. It’s impossible to get tickets to the screenings and the famous people parties, but if you go, you can find a way into either, if you know the right person, and if you don’t, I think you just kind of walk around in your baller winter fairy clothes you never get to wear. It seems at once the most fun and and most horrible thing in the world BY WHICH I MEAN I REALLY WANT TO GO SO THAT I CAN FINALLY SAY I CAN’T COME TO THE (EVENT) I WILL BE AT SUNDANCE, BUT THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR ASKING.

JR Horne.

January 15th, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

The marvelous actor JR Horne went on up to the Old Globe in the sky yesterday. He played the hell out of Pop Pop, an aging Korean War vet, in my play Oohrah! at the Atlantic in 2009. He was everything you want an older actor to be. He was crotchety and wisely opinionated and mildly over it, a total pro watching the kids try, and he was ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT, with a stern yet delicate grumpiness that I don’t think was hard for him to access at all.

There are so many actors that leave marks on so many plays and they should all get blog posts and statues and scholarships and parks named after them for helping shape stories. Here is my small memorial to you. RIP, JR.

January 13th, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

Suffice it to say, Moms Brunstetter and Foster-Keddie had pretty fantastic years. Three Weddings, a baby and an engagement. God be all, YOU get a life event! And YOU get a life event! And Moms be all makin it rain with cute pictures and I be all, capturing the pictures and going to Michaels for a very elaborate frame to hold all of them and meticulously placing the pictures in the frame and hanging the frame upon the wall. You know. Like Whoa.
