what never was, and also never will be

May 22nd, 2014 by Bekah Brunstetter

I had to order approximately 17 pink dresses to find the perfect frock with which to properly serve as bridesmaid to Erin, the reigning queen of all things fluff and sparkle and pink. Here’s one:

It just won’t do, as it is far too naked and much too bright, but there is something about it that I kind of love. It is the epitome of That Girl in Seventh Grade who got her Period First  Attends School Dance and Does Bad Things To and With Everyone, i.e., what I never was, and what I (thankfully? regretfully?) never will be. I will keep it in my closet / wear it just for me / terrify gentleman callers / crash proms.

Scenarios

May 20th, 2014 by Bekah Brunstetter

Dear whoever stole 80 bucks out of my wallet or perhaps found it on the ground after it fell out:

Here are a list of things that you are doing with my money that makes the fact that I lost it palatable. Please adhere.

1.) You are feeding your family.

2.) You are a friend of mine and secretly took it it to buy me a present that is beyond my wildest hopes and dreams (maybe I dream of presents.)

3.) 1/20th of a plane ticket somewhere fun.

4.) You are donating it to a charitable cause.

5.) You are making this fish.

Please do not spend my money on:

1.) Your webseries

2.) Juice

3.) Crack

But Really:

May 19th, 2014 by Bekah Brunstetter

I think I love surfing. Or rather, trying to surf. It’s terrifying and exhilarating and makes me feel like who you are is constantly shifting, and no matter who you think you are, or what you are capable of doing, you can always do else. Or more. Or you can at least always try.  So just stay tuned for the next installment of I am a Surfer now? which will most likely be blogged from the Gut of a massive shark. Where hopefully there is wireless. Inside of said shark.

Seeing, parts 1 and 2

May 19th, 2014 by Bekah Brunstetter

I’m finally nailing down my summer sojourn in Iceland (with the lovely Ms. Maggie Takyar, my friend from grad school, my token Icelandic friend, which everyone should have, it is up there with moleskins and sports scars, in terms of Points) and so I can’t stop looking at pictures of glaciers, which is what I am most excited to see (before, you know. They go.) I can’t stop looking at them,  but also I need to stop looking at them, so that I can fully see them for the first time, in person. I lovehate how we can now see things before we See them.

That time I had the best weekend

May 18th, 2014 by Bekah Brunstetter

Waterfalls and Hiking and first time Surfbort / Grainin on that wood and Buddies and Sun and Beer, all within reasonable driving distance from this bright hot place I now call home.  I am bruised and exhausted and very much the luckiest there ever was. OKAY SO BACK TO WORK!

I loves you, Porggyyyyyyy

May 16th, 2014 by Bekah Brunstetter

Today, on I review plays on my lunch break in two minutes and mostly in All Caps:

PORGY AND BESS AT CENTER THEATRE GROUP.

(OPERA, TECHNICALLY.)

WHY ARE YOU NOT THERE RIGHT NOW.

Beautiful, weird, guttural, nightmare-y, honest, sometimes silly, sad, AUDRA MCDONALD, handsome cripple, harmony that melts and shakes you,  songs that truly emerge from feeling, premiered some 80 years ago:

Somehow better than 99.9% of the things we try and make today, and so worth the necessary Ahmanson parking at earthquake fault line level to see.
