Couch: A Boring Story

August 31st, 2013 by Bekah Brunstetter

Once upon a time, I thought I might buy a couch for sitting purposes: a comfy couch, not so comfy that I might never get off it it, but just comfy enough. And so, I went to buy one, and I discovered that there about 17 thousand different kinds of couches, and was confronted with indecision and big questions begging larger personal issues like what are my priorities? and What is my fabric?  and WHO. AM. I. And finally, I picked one, and one week later, called to schedule delivery and they were like oh, we’re like having it built in Sweden or something and you’ll get it in November and I was like, what? But I want a couch like now, and they were like sorry it’s in Sweden, and I was like well no thank you, and drove to Pasadena and found this couch, and sat on it, and took a picture of it, and bought it, and now I have a couch, but still am not quite sure Who I am, but my fabric: it’s gray.

BOOKS BOOKS BOOKS (and also poem)

August 29th, 2013 by Bekah Brunstetter

Books: you made it across the country!  Thanks for that.  After nearly two years without them, I have been reunited with my books!  For whatever reason, I felt kind of weird without them, and  feel totally restored now that I’ve shelved them and I can look at them. Favorites include a cookbook my grandma contributed to right before she died, a whole stack of middle school poetry journals, all my Brautigans, a really old copy of the Boxcar children, a collection of Shanley plays that I read some many times in grad school it has nearly disentigrated, same with a copy of Anne Lamott’s Bird by Bird, but undergrad, and this book of poems that Literally fell onto my head in a Goodwill in High school, Home in Time by Grace Evelyn Gibson, in which you will find one of my favorite poems:

MALNUTRITION

Midwinter nights

hum as some far-off

scale quivers to mark

wasted, welling years,

balances more weight.

Weary, we comfort

hollowness with steaks

at fast-food chains, hang

our harps by the brown

rivers of cola.

Fat, lonely, we kiss

those we barely know.

Recipes for love’s

ambrosial feast

now lost, we eat swill,

despair to find what

diet hearts require.

BUT IT’S REAL

August 28th, 2013 by Bekah Brunstetter

I just jokingly told a boy I’d make him donut nacho’s if he came over and helped me finish putting together my stupid massively monstrous ikea thing, and then I jokingly consulted the internet to see if such a thing existed, AND THEN IT DID. I’m hungry, I’m confused, I’m angry, I’m inspired!

As Suitable Young Ladies Do

August 27th, 2013 by Bekah Brunstetter

Every Eligible young lady, in addition to gloves, night hats, trivets, forget me nots and nice stationery, must keep the company of at least one other Eligible Young Lady for companionship purposes. This other Eligible young lady should, in theory, have more upper body strength than you for when you need to assemble ten years worth of Ikea furniture, and together, while recounting texts from boys and stories of ex boyfriends, you will build shelves.  BUT SERIOUSLY DARIA AND I BUILT SOME SHELVES.

Wait, actually, I can think of a few like ‘NO’ and ‘WHY.’

Here’s a weird thought:

August 26th, 2013 by Bekah Brunstetter

Well first, here’s a weird picture:

And here’s a weird thought:

I AM REALLY EXCITED TO GO BACK TO WORK. What an odd sensation. I love fresh starts. I can’t wait to get back on a regular schedule and see my co-workers and buy a big new notebook to fill with things that don’t make sense and to find out what kinda trouble Bay and Daphne are going to get into in their Senior Year. Okay, so talk to you in a few months when ALL I WANT IS A DAY OFF.

Sincerely,

I want what I do not have.

T’AINT IT SWEET?

A tiny and adorable and completely ineffective tool set for tiny and adorable activities such as thinking about assembling things, lightly pounding on things, wrenching things, and plying things?

Let meeee, entertain youuu

August 24th, 2013 by Bekah Brunstetter

Being that I now have a Table, I felt it appropriate to Entertain. It was a pretty standard evening of refinement, complete with children’s toys found in my desk, a frank and uninformed discussion of the Middle East, and dress swapping.
