This morning I observed some classes at the incredible Bronx Academy of Letters. Um, inspire much?

I’m doing some research for A Long and Happy Life and it was just so NICE to get out of my head, and into here:

where the teachers and students know way more than I do about charting hurricanes; the history of the English language. Seriously these kids are really motivated, the teachers are patient and sharp, and I’m really looking forward to spending more time here. AND THEN STEALING EVERYTHING FOR MY PLAY, MWAH

I attended the Horton Foote awards last night – a new award for promising American playwrights in honor of the (recently deceased) super inspiring Mr. Foote himself who wrote magically and honestly about everyday people. Large bags of money, in the form of checks, were given to two very deserving playwrights, Lynn Nottage and Will Eno. They both gave super gracious and also inspiring acceptance speeches. Eno said, specifically, that he was so stoked to now pay his 2009 taxes and get two of his teeth fixed.

It got me to thinking about money. Or wait, it’s actually that I always worry about money, all the time. For a playwright, there are all of these incredible awards, fellowships, prizes, that sort of appear randomly like a gift from God. But: you can’t count on them. And the moment you THINK you might get one, or WANT to get one, is the moment the bags of money disappear or burst into flames. There’s money to be had, but you have no idea where it’s coming from – or if it’s coming at all. It’s hard to imagine living like this for the rest of my life – but I also honestly can’t imagine living any other way.

Here’s the thing(s)

September 20th, 2010 by Bekah Brunstetter

I want brown lace up boots for the fall. Like slight combatty in nature and size. Fans, I will not be doing anything insane like tucking jeans inside of them, I will be cuffing jeans OVER them and wearing them with tights. But I a.) can’t afford them and b.) can’t find the ones that I want. They are kind of but NOT like this:

And also kind of but not like THIS:

Oh, wantyness; oh, shopping.

I have assigned myself the task of watching more network TV (woe: me) and you know what? I am very much enjoying myself. A.) good excuse to lay around and call it work and B.) structurally and also storytelling wise there’s tons to be learned from the episodes and C.) fudgsicles and C.2) I am now even more sure that rape is bad. Sure I didn’t need Law and Order to tell me this, but it’s just a pleasant reminder that boys should stop being mean to girls, ie burying them, throwing gas of them, etc. Though I must say, the show sort of equally villanizes both men and women.

To Reunion, or to Live in Hole?

September 19th, 2010 by Bekah Brunstetter

Here’s a question: WHY do I want to go to my high school reunion? My response: well, why not? I spent some time with Julien this weekend, saw a few friends from high school which got me thinking about why I want to go. Julien referred to specific things we endured in high school –  and honestly, I think I’ve kind of blocked or selective memory-ed the whole thing. I literally couldn’t remember. And then, going even further back, I don’t remember lots of middle school either.  I should probably write a play about this. I should also probably learn to use my words to make sentences that make sense. It has been ten years since high school, after all.

In conclusion, here’s the alumni song from the school’s website, which I will now memorize:

Come ye Spartans!  Sing together,

Heart to heart and hand in hand.

Love and laughter long shall linger

Echoing down these halls again.

Though the years may come between us,

Still our Spartan Spirit shines.

In our hearts you’ll live forever

Blue and Gold, Mount Tabor High.

eggplant: who knew?

September 17th, 2010 by Bekah Brunstetter

A VERY IMPORTANT FRIDAY NIGHT UPDATE. I am now into eggplant. It took me a while to get on the boat.  I am slowly a lot liking the things I never liked before, included but not limited to mushrooms, olives, GOLF, and now the weird purple fruit with weird texture that is surprisingly amazing.

So um. Take that, friday night.

I promise I am doing something really exciting later.
