‘I’m on a Boat’

October 26th, 2009 by Bekah Brunstetter

Last night, I patroned a (FUN!)fundraiser for my friends’ theater co, Aztec economy, featuring banjo music, burlesque and plays. And yuengling!  Also it took place on steamship Lilac, a historic boat docked a Pier 40 which youngins can use for art things.  This compelled me, and other patrons,  to say ‘I am on a boat!’ about 700 times. It’s pretty amazing and exciting, how easy it is to raise funds for your endeavors with a party – especially if said party is on a boat, so that patrons can text all of their friends, ‘ I am on a boat!’ And thus have a story to tell for the next week, at least. (‘I was on a boat.’)

I’m in rehearsal now for Mine with Slant Theater Project. It’s mayhaps the smallest play I’ve ever written, character-wise. A love triangle of sorts, with music by Joe Pug (In the way that I stole his amazing music and inserted it into my play – then politely asked him if I could, you know, have it. Thankfully, he said yes.) I had an epiphany last night while watching rehearsal – I think it’s gonna be good! I wrote the play so fast and furiously as its story consumed me pretty quickly – and now I’m sifting back through what exactly it is that I wrote. And I think I like it. I think I like it alot. You should come see! Nov 12-22 at the Lee Strasberg theater, starring some phenomenal actors, some lonesome music, and me, huddled in the back, chewing on my hair.

Amy and Colin got married a few weeks ago in TX. I couldn’t be there cause of Oohrah! which I really really hated and I still can’t believe I wasn’t there to witness this. I mean, their very love blossomed on my Christopher Street futon! Chaperoned, of course.

Oh, well. SOMEHOW the wedding took place without me. Amy was a stunning bride, a beautiful, perfect version of herself, as a bride should be. And how stinking cute and amazing are they? An armadillo cake? A doughnut cake????  Gray Vest thing and bow in hair?! Geez louise. Make the babies already.

Since I couldn’t make it, I’m having a post-wedding celebration thing for them tommorrow night. And they being of the skinny and attractive variety, I thought it’d be fitting for me to bless their union with some heart disease. And what better way, than with some Paula Deen recipes. I’ve been perusing them. I dare you to do it and not get simultaneously disgusted by and excited about gooey butter cake / savannah cheese cake cookies / brie wrapped in biscuit dough / fried stuffing balls (on a stick.) I. Dare. You.

Dan’s going to Afghanistan and I can’t say I have much peace about it.  I know he’ll be fine – he’s extremely savy and is going to be staying on a base for the most part, but I can’t help but be the scared, and the nervous. So to ease my mind, I did a bunch of internet reading and looking and wondering. And while at first, this only made me MORE freaked out – but I did gain a greater understanding of what Dan will be doing – and why he’s doing it. Sure, it seems like a nearly impossible war now, sure the Taliban seems to be stronger than ever and progress is slow – but from what I can tell, the people who live there need the protection. If Dan and his men weren’t there – they might very well be killed. Regardless of whether or not we should have gone there to begin with – they deserve to live in peace.

So, Subsequently, for me, at least  – in having this understanding –  Peace.

Los Angeles!

October 20th, 2009 by Bekah Brunstetter

What? Am I finally sharing thoughts on my adventure? I am! I AM! I misplaced my camera cord thing for about a week. But fortunately, things have been restored to order. And so: I guess like two weeks ago almost? I went to LA. To see my play happy birthday / I’m Dead in a Little Bird festival, and to take some very (very) preliminary TV meetings. I was companioned by my fellow new school-er, Megan Lohne, thank God. We Holiday-Inned, we renta car-ed, we zoo-ed, we survived.

Highlights include me pretending like it would be a pretty profound thing if I took pictures of myself in all the major studio bathrooms, but quickly getting bored of this.

Hugging upon actors in my play,

Being posh, generally, with Megan / offending the fancies of Hollywood blvd with my pigtails:

Seeing buddy for a minute (she is back there, I promise, just obscured by my large face)

And making nice with her friend Peter, whom I liked very much. In fact, here he is, sideways, doing something wrong to someone’s star.

And then also the LOS ANGELES ZOO! Megan and I high-tailed it there when I realized I’d been there for 2 days and hadn’t done a fun thing. So, flamingos.

And most importantly: Bear.

All in all, a very excellent trip. I learned a lot about megan, TV, TV writing, taco’s, doughnuts, bears, driving, merging, traffic, turn signals, parking, ham and cheese crossaints, hotels, and most importantly, myself.
