Today I am sporting a bit of ‘flair!’ I have to say, any sort of innovation or spunkiness I may have previously possessed in terms of dressing myself (see Bekah’s unfortunate high school and college Goodwill wardrobe choices) have gone directly out the window – I sunk into greasy grad student, and then deep into ‘I loathe dressing like a grown up, but sort of do it anyways.’

But every now and then, je sport some sort of flair! Today, I’ve got this little owl pin that I’m obsessed with  – it was my great-grandma’s, Leah Lopin (where I got my middle name.) My grandma gave me a bunch of her old jewelry a while back, and I must say, we have the exact same taste. Why, in heaven, I’m sure we’ll share clothes.

ye ole tale of dinner

August 25th, 2009 by Bekah Brunstetter

Once upon a time, Sarah madeth mexican lasagna and gin gimlets for dinner, in Belated honor of Sir Steve’s birthday, and his eminent departure to Seattle. Steve madeth ye sponge cake with strawberries, and ‘whipped cream, in a can.’

And the Bekah said, It was delicious, all. Henceforth, ergo, we ate the crap out of it.

We are fancy.

I’ve spent the majority of my adult life not worrying about my chubby arms, or the fact that I have little-to-no upper body strength. In my youth, I was never able to pull myself up on water ski’s or back into the boat – my Dad always had to pull me up by my bathing suit*  (scarred for life.)

Lately, though, for some reason, it’s started to bother me. I began to want tickets to the Gun Show. So I’ve started going to a Chisel class where there’s all sorts of awkward side-planky things and useful squatty lifty things. Sure, to actually see any progress, one must focus ALL of one’s energy onto working out, it seems, which I cannot do but: at least I’m trying, right?  I am happy to say, though, I can now sort of do a complete (lady) push up – which is quite a feat for THIS Brunstetter.

* The factual origin of Blaine and Carrie’s favorite thing to say to me when they want me to do something: BEKAHHH!!! GET IN THE BOAT!!!!

I love Brooklyn!

August 22nd, 2009 by Bekah Brunstetter

Today, some folks from the L magazine came by my pad to take some pictures of me ‘in action’ for an upcoming feature on young artists (HURRAY! I am still young! yes? yes.) I wasn’t sure what sort of ‘action’ they find, sides me holed up in front of my computer with a glass of white wine and pages of illegible rehearsal notes, the baby kitty reigning over all. They suggested we venture to a place outside of the apt where I like to write, so I took them to Bushwick county Country Club where I love to go to work when I want to get out of le apartment. We were delighted to find that, as soon as we arrived, the owner of the joint himself (a super-nice guy who is, at his young age, already semi-retired) offered us the remnants of an afternoon BBQ – oysters in the half shell, ribs, burgers, tater salad, etc. After a few shots of me / computer / PBR ( I know. I know. Just fulfilling the stereotype) we dined. Oh, we dined. Oh, generosity; Oh, Brooklyn. I like both of you. (Pictures forthcoming.)

What do you do give to a Seattle-bred Bday boy who has the means to give himself presents of the material variety constantly? He’s got all the Basil plants, cute shirts and video games and gadgets that a boy could want. Whatever should the girlfriend do??

Why, a nautical adventure, of course! Complete with picnic. We both spend so much time working, I thought it’d be nice to, you know, do something. And Do we did.

We took a sunset sail to the Statue of Liberty and back. Happy skippers in khaki’s move about the boat, doing sail-boat related things and bringing you beer and wine.  It was so beautiful and relaxing and – for the first 20 minutes or so (shhhh) SLIGHTLY nauseating (see Bekah; lying down.)

When we reached lady Liberty, it was totally breath-taking. The closest I’ve ever been. So beautiful, that Steve and I sat there starring at her, and Steve said (in earnest) ‘I’m so proud to be an American.’

Me too, birthday boy. Me. Too.

 Or: my Film Friend!

Danny is an ridiculously talented director /producer and is pretty much the only reason I’ve ever managed to write any short films. I met him a few years back through a reading of Fat Kids on Fire and have been hooked ever since – he’s directed two of my short films – Happy Birthday I’m Dead and Vacancy (currently in post-production.) Danny’s got this hot rugged Colorado thing going on, and a crazy vivid imagination combined with an innate sense of how to ground a story. His sheer optimism and drive and savy-ness are forces to be reckoned with. He tends to call me and say things like ‘I need a script that Clint Eastwood would direct by tommorrow!!! Get on it, Brunstetter!!’  or suggest that my characters have interior monologues with their hair; or More of the girls Taking off their Clothes! Less words!

I can always count on him for encouragement and feedback and to talk me off of writerly ledges. Eyes peeled, please, for his upcoming projects, as there is a 110% chance they will be Rad.
