it’s always right there

December 18th, 2018 by Bekah Brunstetter

I’ve escaped to Idyllwild, CA for a few days to finally figure out my $&%^#(@* EXPLETIVE EXPLETIVE latest play that I can’t seem to crack. Play after Play, it really only takes a two hour drive and a few forced conversations with sweet old women who work in stores that sell bedazzled rabbit belt buckles, and maybe an aribtrary purchase of a blanket scarf to hide / live in — and suddenly, my brain is a bit more clear, and suddenly the profound playwriting thoughts come. Sure, once I’m back at home I realize they weren’t so much ‘profound thoughts’  as they were, say, ‘thoughts,’ but it always feels good to feel and share them. And so, humor me. Today I’m thinking about how, whenever I can’t figure out a character or a scene or plot point — THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS, ALWAYS the truth. It’s never something funnier, more exciting, more unexpected — it’s just always the truth. And my favorite thing about the truth is that it’s always there. OKAY, BACK TO SCARF HOME.

field research

December 12th, 2018 by Bekah Brunstetter

EXCITING DRAMATURGICAL ANNOUNCEMENT! I’ve always wanted to write a Christmas Play, so that in the year 2320 when I’m long gone, I’ll be remembered solely by my Christmas play which every robot high school in the midwest performs every single year. And so: my next play, a commission for South Coast Rep in Costa Mesa, CA is about a disgruntled group of Mall Santas. Why, here’s my niece Olivia, helping her auntie with a little field research:

Other words for  ‘field research’ include ‘confronting fears’ and ‘sitting on the warm lap of the devil’ and ‘confusing exercise in terror’ and ‘WHY MOMMY WHY.’ THE FUTURE ROBOT THESPIANS THANK YOU, LIV. NOW GET BACK OUT THERE / TAKE NOTES.

Hey life: you’re cool

October 18th, 2018 by Bekah Brunstetter

SO: In 2012, Colorado newlyweds Charlie Craig and David Mullins were denied a wedding cake, which inspired me to write a play, which ultimately led to me spending five years of my life talking about Cake, which 30 years in the future, I will fondly reflect back on as ‘Cake Years,’ and please let there still be real cake then and not just ‘cake icon’ that I scan into my nose through my facewatch. In September 2018, Charlie and Craig  went to see a production of the Cake in Denver, Colorado.

After the performance, they and the lawyer who first defended them participated in a talk-back with the audience. I’m sure it must have been surreal for them, especially since I’m sure they’re sick of hearing and talking about this thing that became much larger than they ever intended it to be, but — my hope is that it gave them some hope, or at least some permission to laugh about the absurdity of a Cake being so brutally divisive.  Isn’t playmaking the weirdest, and the most best? Thank you, Charlie and David, for your pain, thank you for letting me twist it and shape it into something that hopefully hurts less.

A DREAM OF LOVE

July 3rd, 2018 by Bekah Brunstetter

I straight up dreamt last night that I was in a theater, and I was happy.  Like I was in a theater, a dark and slightly cold theater, my favorite place, watching a rehearsal of a play I’d written some eight years ago, THIS PLAY, in fact:

…and I was just watching the actors act the words that I wrote, build on them and make them better, clarify my own intentions, and I was just sitting there thinking to myself, I love this. A pure and uncynical and grateful love. And then I had to go next door to another theater because there were some other people rehearsing another one of my old plays, and so I just sat with them for a while and watched them work. And I just sat there loving what I do, in love with sitting in cold places and observing the magic seconds when a thing that’s lived only in my head starts to exist with other people and outside of myself, in love with the the moments when we’re all so slightly cold, and all so happy to be there.

I WAS (NOT AT) THE TONYS!

June 11th, 2018 by Bekah Brunstetter

Last night, in his acceptance speech, Andrew Garfield dedicated his Tony for his performance in Angels in America to the LGBTQ community, and made some comment, a la ‘let’s bake a cake for everyone!’ I was not watching the Tony’s, as I was too busy spiraling into self-loathing over rewrites on a thing that could one day maybe actually GET me an actual Tony, but I received a bunch of sweet texts and emails from people watching, as I am now forever associated with Cake (ASK ME IF I’M MAD AT IT/ I’M NOT.) So for now, let’s just shout into the universe, I WON (BY WHICH I MEAN ANDREW GARFIELD WON AND THEN SAID A THING THAT REMINDED PEOPLE OF SOMETHING I WROTE) A TONY!

draft two

June 9th, 2018 by Bekah Brunstetter

Me, writing my first draft: DID I INVENT WRITING? WOW. NO ONE HAS EVER WRITTEN LIKE THIS. NO ONE HAS EVER EVEN SEEN THE WORLD LIKE THIS. I AM A SPECIAL, MAGIC UNICORN WITH A SECRET. BUT I’M NOT EVEN A UNICORN. UNICORNS ARE BASIC. I AM A NEW BEING, WITH WINGS STUFFED WITH TREASURES MADE OF WORDS. GOSH, IT SURE IS COZY HERE INSIDE OF THIS GIANT TRAPPER KEEPER FORMED FROM MY OWN NARCISSISM.

(I get notes, I shrink back to earth.)

Me, writing my second draft:

What are words?

Who are people?

Who am I?

WHAT IS PLAY
