unhalloween

October 31st, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

Being a married woman now, I am, in fact, far too elegant and mature to engage in any sort of seasonal pageantry or casual workplace costume contest, and far too busy on my week-ends with the errands and the preparing of things for my husband to drive way out of my way for costume piece so that I might be a Pig in a Blanket. No time for such tomfoolery. This terrifying nose just comes with my face.

WHY TO BE JEWISH

October 4th, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

We had the honor of being included in a Rosh Hoshanah dinner last night, and my main take away, other than the weird and beautiful feeling the sung prayers gave me: LORD, WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN HIDING SNICKERDOODLE MAC N CHEESE ALL MY LIFE, READ: KUGEL, WITH ITS LAYERS OF PASTA AND CINNAMON AND EVERYTHING IN THE DAIRY CASE CAREFULLY PILLOWED IN A PAN?

OH, IN THAT OTHER RELIGION THAT IS IN FACT IN MY BLOOD AND HISTORY THAT MY GRANDMOTHER, BLESS HER HEART,  KEPT TRYING TO TEACH ME  ABOUT? OKAY COOL SEE YOU IN SYNAGOGUE.

July 4th, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

You could

1.) use a calendar

2.) spy on me  until you find me AT MY MOST EXTREME HAPPY spending an entire day crafting a flag cake

3.) wait for the sky to explode

I live on the land

July 2nd, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

Hi, I live in America.  Chances are, you do too. WHAT DOES IT MEAN? It’s rare that we see what this truly means. We are so blessed  and so American that we don’t fully grasp what it means to not live here. I  rarely note the powers that be, mostly when I pay taxes or stand in line at the DMV or click and read. I have yet to really come head to head with frustrating or unfair laws. I have to yet to require assistance that my country then provides, or at least not in a way that I can see.  I am protected by invisible forces that zip by my periphery.  I am so blessed with riches and nitrocellulose and color and coffee table and freedom and time that I can, in fact, paint my nails to match my country and call it patriotism. America is a blind spot. It is a mayonnaise haze. It is forever floating in circles in your friend’s nice pool that you need a key code to access, but she has given it to you, so hurray for you. There is never not water there.

CINCO DE MAYO, OR:

May 6th, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

The one day a year that we all pretend to be well versed in Mexican culture and eat so many chips and so much guacamole that the next morning there’s a carb brick the size of Mexico lodged in our guts and it will be weeks if not months before we want either again, unless of course wait, are those chips the extra salty kind and perhaps is that Guac super chunky and limey OKAY FINE JUST GIVE ME ALL OF THE CHIPS AND GUAC VIVA LA MEXICO I LOVE HISPANICS

Déjà Soup

March 30th, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

Here’s a downside of having a blog that you’ve been bloggy upon for going on 9 years: you think to yourself, I made a soup with my leftover Easter Ham! How thrilling! PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW! But then you realize:  Seven years ago, you did the exact same thing and also already blogged about it and you are on roller-skates and your life is a round rink of sorts and you just go around it and go around it, touching the wall for support at the same points.  Oh, so then maybe you should perhaps dig a tiny bit deeper and think about something else to blog about today? NOPE. WHO HAS TIME FOR THOUGHT? NOPE. SOUP AGAIN. I MADE SOUP WITH MY LEFTOVER EASTER HAM. IT WAS GOOD, CARRY ON WORLD, CARRY ON. But also, before you do, here’s the fantastic recipe.

RISEN!

March 27th, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

A very happy Easter to you and also yours! May it be full of pastels and new beginnings and CARBS. LOTS AND LOTS OF CARBS.

SO MANY CARBS THAT YOU SLEEP FOR TEN DAYS AND WAKE UP A DIFFERENT PERSON WHO ONLY WEARS OVERALLS.

YOU KNOW. BECAUSE OF ALL THE CARBS THERE IS NO LONGER SUCH A THING AS PANTS.

ERRAND

March 24th, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

I can barely express how much  I love that on my calendar today are the words ‘pick up Ham’ and that the Ham has a confirmation number and that I will buckle the Ham in like a baby and drive it home, perhaps talk to it, guide it into the fridge like a prize. AND THEN YOU KNOW, EAT IT ALL.

2016.

January 1st, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

So excited to spend 2016 with my adorable life partner, my stable and solid best friend, my reliable companion, my joy, BY WHICH I OF COURSE MEAN this incredible pumpkin pot that Morrison’s mind-reader aunt got me for Christmas:

MORRISON, HE OKAY TOO.  Here’s to a year of elaborate seasonal meals and things shaped like other things and love and, at all times, gratitude.
