preferred classic literature

Leo Tolstoy WHO? After years of trying to read dense books before bed, I hereby, going forward, only ever want to read seasonal romance novels about beautiful round british baker women who’s bakeries hit crisises at Christmas time, as do their relationships with their beekeeper boyfriends. I don’t care if my brain turns to sprinkles and croissant dough, reading should be an escape, and so THIS IS ALL THAT I WANT.

CHRISTMAS LIST, UNLOCKED

December 25th, 2017 by Bekah Brunstetter

OH HI, are you taking a moment away from your family, be they great, to retreat into the calm of internet, which is to say, take a contemporary deep breath? WELCOME! Don’t forget to also breathe actual breaths. I just wanted to share that All I Wanted for Christmas is a Mother-In-Law who respects and appreciates Christmas ornaments as much as myself and my own mother:

and also  Snow in my Gob.

I AM LEGIT SATIATED FOR LIKE 3-4 MORE CHRISTMASES. Merry Christmas, everyone. I hope you got not just Christmas List Things, but Things that surprised you, that made you feel known and loved. OKAY, BACK TO CARBS.

if not

December 24th, 2017 by Bekah Brunstetter

Remember how yesterday I was all philosophically like wahhhhh, I maybe want to be someplace far way and regarding something grand! OPEN YOUR EYES, BRUNSTETTER. The view from the Foster-Keddie estate up in Olypmia, Washington, is stunning,  if not tranquil and quieting, if not completely humbling:

Is this how you use ‘if not?’ Asking for a friend. Myself. My friend is myself. We hang out often, if not always.

THESE TURKEYS

November 23rd, 2017 by Bekah Brunstetter

As I’m sure all five of you noticed, my blog was non-existent yesterday for some reason, and so for maybe the third time in ten years, I couldn’t tell you what kind of gummy bear I was eating or what I was worried about. THANK GOD IT’S BACK UP TODAY, so I can tell you how grateful I am for these particular turkeys:

My Dad, who has just acquired his dream retirement home and life on Smith Mountain Lake, Virginia:

And my niece nugget Olivia, who mostly enjoys making faces at herself in the mirror.

SAME, LIVY. SAME.

bathwater of choice

November 21st, 2017 by Bekah Brunstetter

A combination of a series of long and draining weeks and  it being almost Thanksgiving  makes me want to submerge myself in a giant vat of butternut squash soup, and then rest on the warm top  like a tiny roasted and salted pepita or a small and decorative piece of raddish, and just float there for days. THAT WOULD BE MOST GOURDGEOUS.

HALLOWEEN HEROES

October 29th, 2017 by Bekah Brunstetter

Mo and I have been too busy throwing our life into boxes and making sure our new house has chairs to fully Halloween this year, so instead, I would like to highlight a few friends who have TRULY KILLED, I MEAN SKILLFULLY AND BEAUTIFULLY AND PERFECTLY MURDERED THEIR COSTUMES THIS YEAR.

Sheila and son Cal as Neo and Trinity from The Matrix:

Jason, Blaine, wee chicky Ruby and niece Laurel as Farm Folk:

And last but not least, the beautiful and sexual and currently romantically available Mack Yeager as Game of Thrones creator, George R.R. Martin:

I MEAN:

HERO

where I stand

October 26th, 2017 by Bekah Brunstetter

Re: the aforementioned photo shoot, yesterday afternoon:

I enter the La times photo studio, and immediately clock a beautifully lit white table.

Me: ….do you want me like — on the table? Or near it?

Photographer: Oh! that’s for the turkey.

Me:…hmm?

Photographer: After you, we’re shooting the Turkey for our Thanksgiving spread.

Me: Haha! How about me WITH the turkey?

Photographer: NO, NO, WE NEED THE TURKEY BY ITSELF.

never present

August 24th, 2017 by Bekah Brunstetter

Were I to be doing self-reflective inventory of my best and worst qualities, I would say that one of the worst is that I am NEVER. PRESENT (except of course for our wedding reception, during which I shouted at people I FEEL SO PRESENT! Which maybe made me, say, 30% more present.)  I’m always minutes if not months ahead, instead of just being where and when I am. Case in point: ALL I CAN THINK ABOUT IS WHAT FOOD I WILL MAKE AT OUR HOUSEWARMING SLASH CHRISTMAS PARTY IN DECEMBER. How I will lay it on the table. How I will turn grapes into santa faces, how I will arrange the Cheeses, how I will stack the seasonal napkins, fan them out. I truly wonder, when I am inside of said Housewarming slash Christmas party, WILL I EVEN ACTUALLY BE THERE?

Patriotic Perspective

July 4th, 2017 by Bekah Brunstetter

On this Fourth of July, let us not be distracted by tiny flag shorts and giant hot dogs and things that go Boom in the night, but instead remember what this day is really, actually about, which is of course MY NIECE WEARING THIS OUTFIT.

‘Only in the darkness can you see the Stars’

January 16th, 2017 by Bekah Brunstetter

Today, on White Girl with Blog, I spent some time this morning reading through some of MLK’s best quotes, just to hang out with his memory for a few minutes, acknowledge all that he did. Inspirational quotes that are memes waiting to happen are only a PALTRY SLIVER of what he contributed and made happen, but I will leave a few favorites here, all the same. They transcend issues of race and tap into even larger questions about humanity. WE BASICALLY NEED EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THEM APPROXIMATELY RIGHT NOW.

“If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.”

“Faith is taking the first step even when you can’t see the whole staircase.”

“That old law about ‘an eye for an eye’ leaves everybody blind. The time is always right to do the right thing.”

“Intelligence plus character–that is the goal of true education.”

“I have decided to stick to love … Hate is too great a burden to bear.”

No one really knows why they are alive until they know what they’d die for.”

“People fail to get along because they fear each other; they fear each other because they don’t know each other; they don’t know each other because they have not communicated with each other.”
