This is My Episode

November 1st, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

My first episode of This is Us airs tonight! I just love writing for this show, so much. It’s the first TV job where I really feel like I can be my full writer self, a little heartfelt, a little cheeky, little strange. I can’t tell you much about what happens in tonight’s episode, but I WILL say that characters will say things, feel things, make decisions, make jokes, sit in cars, put on clothes, and eat cheese. GUYS, ALL OF THE SIGNATURE BRUNSTETTER TOUCHES ARE ALL UP IN THIS EPISODE.

The train

October 26th, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

Oh, did you want content UNRELATED to the beautiful weekend / life experience I just had? Feel free to check back in approximately one year once I’ve come back down. I have every intention of slowly trotting out memories and moments here so that I continue to fully remember every moment of it. It’s still kind of a blur, even though apparently, I’ve been informed that the moonshine at the reception in fact made me stomp around shouting to people, I FEEL SO PRESENT! And so today, on the Wedding, the train of my dress — pictured here with my Grandma’s mink:

It was long. Like epic long. When I got the dress I knew it was slightly impractical, being that the ceremony was in the grass under a tree, and that the reception was in a horse stable. But I loved its fairy queen-ness AND its impracticality. But after the I do’s and pictures, the best feeling ever was just LETTING THE THING GO AND DRAG THROUGH THE DIRT.

There is something amazing about getting very dressed up and then letting it all go.  It felt so freeing. The release of tension, literal and figurative.

CINCO DE MAYO, OR:

May 6th, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

The one day a year that we all pretend to be well versed in Mexican culture and eat so many chips and so much guacamole that the next morning there’s a carb brick the size of Mexico lodged in our guts and it will be weeks if not months before we want either again, unless of course wait, are those chips the extra salty kind and perhaps is that Guac super chunky and limey OKAY FINE JUST GIVE ME ALL OF THE CHIPS AND GUAC VIVA LA MEXICO I LOVE HISPANICS

Déjà Soup

March 30th, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

Here’s a downside of having a blog that you’ve been bloggy upon for going on 9 years: you think to yourself, I made a soup with my leftover Easter Ham! How thrilling! PEOPLE NEED TO KNOW! But then you realize:  Seven years ago, you did the exact same thing and also already blogged about it and you are on roller-skates and your life is a round rink of sorts and you just go around it and go around it, touching the wall for support at the same points.  Oh, so then maybe you should perhaps dig a tiny bit deeper and think about something else to blog about today? NOPE. WHO HAS TIME FOR THOUGHT? NOPE. SOUP AGAIN. I MADE SOUP WITH MY LEFTOVER EASTER HAM. IT WAS GOOD, CARRY ON WORLD, CARRY ON. But also, before you do, here’s the fantastic recipe.

GET ON IT.

February 20th, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

Today, on sometimes this is a whimsical food blog because when I get stressed out I like to avoid any and all actual responsibilities and bake: THESE. COOKIES.

Oh, but they just look like regular cookies, you say. Get over yourself, you say. WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL, YOU SAY / ASK.

THEY ARE MADE WITH HONEY INSTEAD OF SUGAR, AND COCONUT FLOUR INSTEAD OF WHITE FLOUR.  A lot of times, when you futz with the bad (good) stuff when baking and try and shove a cookie full of greek yogurt instead of butter or like bok choy instead of chocolate it just turns out wrong and strange. But these dudes are fluffy and decadent and perfect and I’ve made them twice since discovering them. Make them! Give them away with a mild air of superiority!

RECIPE HERE.

2016.

January 1st, 2016 by Bekah Brunstetter

So excited to spend 2016 with my adorable life partner, my stable and solid best friend, my reliable companion, my joy, BY WHICH I OF COURSE MEAN this incredible pumpkin pot that Morrison’s mind-reader aunt got me for Christmas:

MORRISON, HE OKAY TOO.  Here’s to a year of elaborate seasonal meals and things shaped like other things and love and, at all times, gratitude.

Hey Elli: You’re Great.

October 15th, 2015 by Bekah Brunstetter

Cousin Elli — who works in Child Protection for the FBI, so is an FBI agent? Yes? Is that how it works? —  texted last night with an apology for missing Pete’s wedding, and it was perhaps one of the most baller excuses I’ve seen.  She was, you know, rescuing children from an underground prostitution ring, like you do.

Never again will I say ‘sorry I was not at your thing, I tried to make it’ or ‘I needed a night in’ or ‘I had to get my romper hemmed’ or ‘I really needed to connect with my crockpot’ or ‘I didn’t want to go because I don’t really like you and I feel like our friendship is based upon mirrors and lies.’ ELLI WINS ALL OF THE EXCUSES FOR THE REST OF FOREVER. Thank you cousin for doing what you doooooo!

fantasy moment

August 27th, 2015 by Bekah Brunstetter

Every playwright fantasizes about her first New York Times Interview. How she’ll breeze two minutes late into the Cobble Hill cafe, a free moment between rehearsals,  in 400 dollar jeans but it’s not a thing that’s discussed, just a thing that the journalist notices,  order a chardonnay at eleven AM, speak deeply of important things in a way that no one quite ever has.

Well.

Yesterday morning I had my first NYT  interview over the phone re: the incredible upcoming Women’s playwright’s festival in DC. I will have you all know that I did this interview in my night shirt, which is a thing that I have, not having yet brushed my teeth, shoving string cheese into my face while also trying to get dressed for work, and I can’t fully remember anything I said and there was no glamour or profundity and my greatest hope / wish is that I SPOKE IN SENTENCES AND USED WORDS RIGHT.

HOW DID I EVER

November 12th, 2013 by Bekah Brunstetter

Behold, a web series! It’s hard to imagine constructing a non-play thing without notecards. Colors! Columns! Clarity! You stare and stare at your computer but then once you get it up on the wall, it all suddenly starts to make some sense.

(Note: I realize that I perhaps jeopardize this project by posting a picture of its story beats on the internet. But I feel like if you have the time to stalk the blog of a C list playwright, find and zoom into said picture, decipher the insanity written on the cards and steal the ideas, then that sounds like a personal problem, and best of luck to you.)
