BEAR CAMP

September 23rd, 2017 by Bekah Brunstetter

Morrison’s Dad came through town last night, en route to the High Sierras for a 3 day solo spiritual awakening hike type situation, like you do. (Please note the similarities between father and son, proving that things like Calm and Practicality  are, in fact, genetic.) Hearing him talking about it, I said that I absolutely need something similar, though I would probably make it about ten minutes before I wondered what was next on the agenda, if there was somewhere  nearby that sold commemorative magnets or shoes, if there was some site to go see. He suggested that I start my outdoors life (of which I kind of have none) with a family trip to Bear Camp. I REPEAT, BEAR CAMP. It’s a glamping trip in Canada where you live in the trees above the Bears, observe them, and occasionally venture down for hikes and river trips, etc. NOW ALL I WANT TO DO IS GO TO BEAR CAMP. It’s all I want. Mostly so that when people ask me what I did over break, I can just casually say ‘Oh, I went to bear camp,’ then offer no more information, like that’s just a thing that people do. I will then become known as a person who camps with Bears,  which is obviously a career-defining reputation. You should hire Bekah. She camps with bears. Yes. THOSE Bears.

I used to be fun

August 23rd, 2017 by Bekah Brunstetter

Three years ago this week, I was gallivanting around Iceland,  hiking various glaciers and swimming in various lagoons. This week, in checking Lowes.com everyday to see if their Labor Day sale as started so we can buy a fridge and a dishwasher. I’m not mad the change, tho. Given that last night we legit spent happy hour deep in the world of kitchen faucets, I think that THIS IS NOW MY IDEA OF FUN.

the names of Boats

June 12th, 2017 by Bekah Brunstetter

At the request of Mrs. Foster Keddie, Mr. Foster Keddie took Mrs. Foster Keddie up to Santa Barbara for the weekend before her birthday,  so that Mrs. Foster Keddie might indulge in one of her favorite things, which is drinking wine by a pool while also looking at an ocean. After a few hours of this, Mr. and Mrs. Foster Keddie took a stroll up a pristine beach towards plates of carbohydrates, past rows of boats with names like ‘Truth’ and and ‘Conception.’ When asked by Mr. Foster Keddie what she might name a boat if she had it, Mrs. Foster Keddie replied “…Float box” to which Mr. Foster Keddie laughed, remarking that he would in fact name his boat the very same.

nonpost

I do not engage in mindless and narcissistic social pacts such as ‘Throwback Thursday,’ but here is a picture of myself that just so happens to be from the past clearly posing in front of a house that is actually made of mirrors so that it might reflect my own self back to me 100 times.

what is a house

April 12th, 2017 by Bekah Brunstetter

One of my favorite things about going to another country for the first time is seeing what the houses are like. I like to watch people coming in and out of them, sitting outside of them, listening to the radio, shucking corn,  living their lives, and I especially like to look away really fast when I make eye contact with one of these people, like I wasn’t just turning the poor person into a poem. Obviously in every country there are big cities with fancy parts, and basically all of those people live in condos with lobbies and farmers sinks and walk in closets and flat screen TVs. But when you step outside of the big cities,  you can really get a sense of what’s unique about the country and its homes. Here’s a piece of the outskirts of Cusco, from the window of a bus:

What was most striking to me about Peruvian houses was the fact that a lot of them are constantly in progress, being built upon. You see them and think, oh, no one is living in that house, it’s a construction site, there are bricks and tarps. A lot of the roofs have these metal rods sticking out of them which I finally realized (by which I mean, Julien explained) that it’s prep for a second story of the house. I think in America we’re obsessed with presentation, with things being Done and looking a certain way. But in Peru, and certainly other parts of the world that I have yet to see, a house is a thing that is built over the years while you live inside of it.

how to prepare for international travel

March 25th, 2017 by Bekah Brunstetter

1.) Research place.

2.) Purchase tickets.

3.) RESEARCH EVERY POSSIBLE THING THAT COULD GO WRONG IN SAID PLACE, OR JUST IN A FOREIGN COUNTRY IN GENERAL,  AND THOROUGHLY CONVINCE YOURSELF THAT EACH OF THESE THINGS WILL HAPPEN TO YOU AS IF YOUR LIFE IS ACTUALLY A MOVIE WRITTEN BY AN GRADUATE SCREENWRITING STUDENT WHO BELIEVES THAT SOMETHING TERRIBLE MUST HAPPEN ON EVERY PAGE BUT WHO ALSO HAS A KEEN SENSE OF IRONY AND SO THE CHARACTER GOES INTO THE SITUATION BELIEVING THAT EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE BUT THEN BAM THEY ARE PUNISHED FOR THEIR IGNORANCE VIA LOST PASSPORTS AND FLOODS!

4. Hey, take a breath. Remember you are lucky to go at all, and that this is what life is for. Experiencing another culture broadens your understanding of humans and

5. REMIND YOURSELF NOT TO RE-APPROPRIATE OTHER PEOPLES’ CULTURES FOR YOUR OWN GROWTH

6. Buy an absurd amount of gum as if gum does not exist in other countries.

7. GO ON YOUR TRIP, PSYCHO.

new place game

March 16th, 2017 by Bekah Brunstetter

I’m going to teach you a game called New Place Game that I oftentimes play in my head. Its rules are simple.

1.) Be on a walk that you’ve done a hundred times, like to get coffee or to the gym. This could also be a drive.

2.) Pretend like you are from across the world and are just visiting this place for the first time. Look at everything as if it’s your first time seeing it.  Take in the details, absorb the fact that people live in these houses and get their milk everyday at these stores. Pretty soon you will feel that thrill of being far from your bed and books where no one knows your name.

4.) Expect the thrill to last for a maximum of 30 seconds until you remember who and where you actually are, so appreciate each of these seconds individually.

5.) Return to your life with a new lens, having gone somewhere you’ve never been, having never actually left.

AUTHENTIC EXPERIENCE

March 12th, 2017 by Bekah Brunstetter

Morrison and I in fact live just down the road from Thaitown, Los Angeles, which features a Thai Plaza filled with restaurants and bakeries and everything you might want to suspend your disbelief and convince yourself that you are not in your life, but actually still on your honeymoon. In said plaza, newlyweds can order deep fried whole fishes and those weird little pancakes with marshmallow and corn and Chang declare to no one, ‘this is almost as good as when we were in Thailand but slightly not as good because right now we are not in Thailand but actually just in a strip mall’ and also ‘PS WE WENT TO THAILAND.’

Temeculand

March 1st, 2017 by Bekah Brunstetter

Tucked somewhere south east of LA that I still don’t fully understand but I am Here so hats off to that — We find Temecula, another beautiful wine country, as if California did not have enough already. Here, a girl can escape to write and actually sleep ON a vineyard and allow her panic to meet relaxation and sample their wines until the Malbec flicks her off to sleep, safely tucked inside of one of her own ideas which will change completely by the time she wakes up.

PURA VIDA FOR LIFE

February 19th, 2017 by Bekah Brunstetter

It’s that time of year in which my brain that exists outside of my body in a sea of zeros and ones by which I mean Facebook reminds me that this time, three years ago, Julien and I were gallivanting around Costa Rica without a care in the world except for Julien’s allergies.

Every time these memories pop up, either in my actual head because of actual human memory feelings, or on Facebook, I am overjoyed that we got to go do what we did. I will relive its moments forever, and I will never forget it, as FACEBOOK WILL NOT EVEN ALLOW ME TO.
